Don’t let them trick you. The only kind of bread that’s good for you is the kind that’s labeled “whole grain”.

Nuts to Clobber Cholesterol

If you are looking for a way to keep your heart healthy and still satisfy your snacking mood, pistachios and sunflower seeds may be the powerful cholesterol-fighting tool your body needs.

A new study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, shows that these nuts and seeds rank at the top of the list for containing cholesterol-lowering compounds, phytosterols. While many nuts contain this helpful compound, the study is the first to determine which of these little treats have the largest amount of this cholesterol-clobbering ingredient.

“We tried to establish values for all these foods, so others can determine their value in the diet,” said Dr. Katherine Phillips, study author from the department of biochemistry and food chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Phytosterols are found only in plant-based foods and very closely resemble the molecular structure of cholesterol. But unlike cholesterol, phytosterols are not easily absorbed by the body. Scientists believe that because of this, the compound can partially block cholesterol from being absorbed, thereby lowering overall cholesterol levels naturally.

Philips and her colleagues recognized that nuts and seeds tend to be high in phytosterols, but no study had adequately compared the amounts of the compound found in all of the varieties, which range in size from poppy seeds to walnuts.

While wheat germ and sesame seeds were found to contain the highest amount of phytosterols, according to the tests, most people do not eat these foods by themselves, let alone in high enough amounts for it to matter. So, the third and forth place finishers, sunflower seeds and pistachios, were considered by Philips to be the most practical nutty snack for people looking to lower their cholesterol.

Even if you don’t consider sunflower seeds or pistachios a desirable treat, any of the nuts and seeds tested were found to contain at least a small amount of phytosterols. So, if walnuts are more tempting than pistachios, munch away. But Philips also advises you to consider other options, such as diet and exercise, that are proven to substantially help lower your cholesterol.

“This isn’t the only food product to prevent high cholesterol,” she said. “There are many other factors at play.” It is well known that Macadamia nuts helps reduce heart attack.

Macadamia Nuts Help Reduce Heart Attack

There is a new entrant in the category of heart healthy food. Macadamia nuts included in a heart healthy diet can effectively cut low-density cholesterol or bad cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular problems, according to a new study.

MacadamiaThe researchers suggest that macadamia nuts should be included among nuts with qualified health claims.

“We looked at macadamia nuts because they are not currently included in the health claim for tree nuts, while other tree nuts are currently recommended as part of a heart healthy diet,” said Dr. Amy E. Griel, a recent Penn State Ph.D. recipient in nutrition and now senior nutrition scientist at The Hershey Company.

“Macadamia nuts have higher levels of mono saturated fats, like those found in olive oil compared with other tree nuts,” she added.

“Epidemiological studies showed that people who are frequent nut consumers have decreased risk of heart disease,” said Penny Kris-Etherton, co-author and distinguished professor of nutritional sciences.

The study involved participants who had slightly elevated cholesterol levels, normal blood pressure and were not taking lipid-lowering drugs.

The participants were randomly assigned either the macadamia nut diet or the standard American diet and provided all meals for the participants for five weeks. They then switched diets and continued eating only food provided by the researchers for another five weeks.

The findings revealed that Healthy Heart diet with macadamia nuts did reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared with the standard American diet.

The macadamia nuts reduced total cholesterol by 9.4 percent and low-density lipoprotein by 8.9 percent.

“We found that the reduction in LDL or bad cholesterol we observed was greater than would be predicted by just the healthy fats in the nuts alone,” said Griel.

“This indicates that there is something else in the nuts that helps lower cholesterol,” she added.

What is Macadamia?

Egg Good or Bad for Health

There is a wide spread speculation about the benefits of Egg. It sure is a good food for children’s, but what about grownups. A new study exposes the risk of eating Egg among the Middle-aged man. Middle-aged men who ate seven or more eggs a week had a higher risk of earlier death, US researchers reported.

Men with diabetes who ate any eggs at all raised their risk of death during a 20-year period studied, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition . The study adds to an ever-growing body of evidence, much of it contradictory, about how safe eggs are to eat. It did not examine what about the eggs might affect the risk of death.

Men without diabetes could eat up to six eggs a week with no extra risk of death, Dr Luc Djousse and Dr J Michael Gaziano of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School found.

“Whereas egg consumption of up to six eggs a week was not associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, consumption of (seven or more) eggs a week was associated with a 23% greater risk of death,” they wrote.

“However, among male physicians with diabetes, any egg consumption is associated with a greater risk of all-cause mortality, and there was suggestive evidence for a greater risk of MI (heart attack) and stroke.” They urged more study in the general population.

Eggs are rich in cholesterol, which in high amounts can clog arteries and raise the risk of heart attack and stroke. One expert on nutrition and heart disease said the study suggests middle-aged men, at least, should watch how many eggs they eat. This is irrespective of the fact that Gees are linked to High-Cholestrol.

“More egg on our faces? It’s really hard to say at this point, but it still seems, if you’re a middle-aged male physician and enjoy eggs more than once a day, that having some of the egg left on your face may be better than having it go down your gullet,” said Dr Robert Eckel of the University of Colorado and a former president of the American Heart Association.

“The act of avoidance appears to completely backfire. The most harmful thing you can do is to tell people not to think about eating chocolate. We have to tackle behavior itself by giving women alternatives instead of making them abstain,” according to lead researcher James Erskine.

In fact, Erskine and his team at the University of Hertfordshire came to the conclusion after studying 130 volunteers who were asked to eat chocolate after being told either to suppress or to express their thoughts about chocolate by talking aloud.

The researchers found that women who were asked to suppress their thoughts about chocolate consumed 50 per cent more when offered it, compared with women who were told to express their feelings about chocolate.

Though women who tried to suppress their feelings about chocolate showed a clear rebound effect, men who took part in the study were found to be less prone to the effect, instead eating more when told to express their feelings.

“The rebound effect seems to be most prevalent when people are trying to suppress something that they see as problematic. It could just be that women see eating chocolate as more problematic than men do. We now need to find new ways to help women change their behavior rather than just telling them not to eat things,” Erskine was quoted as saying. Cure for High BP and Obesity

Can a single pill treat problems of high blood pressure, reduce cholesterol level and act as a blood thinner? Seems like this may be possible soon. In one of the largest clinical trials being conducted for the first time, the impact of the ‘wonder drug’ is being assessed across 20 cities in India.

The trials of the drug ‘polypack’ manufactured by Cadila Pharmaceuticals are being conducted on 2,000 subjects, between the age of 45 and 80 years, who have any one of the risk factors – age, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or high blood sugar.

The ‘polypack’ contains a combination of five drugs in eight different formulations (three blood pressure lowering agents, an antiplatelet drug, a beta blocker, an ACE inhibitor, a diuretic and a statin) for treating cardio-vascular conditions such as reducing blood pressure and lowering cholesterol levels.

Simply put, the polypack includes blood pressure lowering combinations, aspirin (blood thinner) and a statin, which is a cholesterol lowering agent.

The trials are being conducted by St John Research Institute, Bangalore and Canada-based Population Health Research Institute.

“We need to assess the impact (efficacy) of the different combinations on an individual who has cardio-vascular risk factors, and also the safety of these drugs taken together. The side-effects of the five medicines will also be studied,” says Dr Rajeev Gupta of Fortis Hospital, Jaipur who is involved in the study.

The subjects will be given the combination drug for three months and a follow up will be done in the fourth month. The trials will be completed by July and findings put together by end of the year.

The second phase of trials will assess whether heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the combination drug, Gupta added.

Cardiovascular diseases are major causes of mortality in the Indian subcontinent, causing over 30% of deaths. It has been predicted that these diseases will increase rapidly and India will contribute to over half the cases of heart diseases in the world within the next 15 years.

Coronary heart disease and stroke have increased in both urban and rural areas. The sharp rise in cardiovascular problems including heart disease and stokes is attributed to increasing number of smokers, obesity with high waist to hip ratio, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stress and sedentary lifestyle.

Crash Diets Reduces Lifespan

Crash dieting doesn’t reduce your waistline alone; it significantly reduces your life expectancy too.

Researchers at Glasgow University observed that fish given a “binge then diet” food regime had a reduced lifespan of up to 25%.

Their study compared the growth rate, success of reproduction and lifespan of stickleback fish. They believe the findings could have implications for teenagers and children who follow extreme patterns of dieting. This is because they are still growing.

The study was conducted by researchers in the University of Glasgow’s faculty of biomedical and life sciences, reports BBC News portal.

The findings are published in the journal, Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Professor Neil Metcalfe said: “The fish on the fluctuating diet put just as much effort into breeding -the males became brightly coloured as usual and the females produced the normal number of eggs.

“However, on average their lifespan was three-quarters that of animals eating a constant amount every day.” The research found that the difference in lifespan was not a consequence of more rapid aging but an increase in the risk of sudden death.

Metcalfe added: “It seems that uneven growth, due to the fluctuation in the amount eaten per day, is responsible for the increase in the risk of sudden death.

“This is possibly because the body tissues are more likely to have imperfections due to growth spurts.”

Similar results would most likely be seen in other animals with short lifespans that grow throughout their lives, said Metcalfe.

But it could also be applied to humans who follow extreme patterns of dieting, he went on, and could be seen in teenagers and children who are still growing.

Metcalfe said: “Applying this to humans, it would only occur in children and teenagers.

“But it would be for extreme switches in diet. Just skipping lunches would not have any effect, but if they had several weeks of one diet followed by several weeks of the extreme opposite, then there could be an effect.”

The world has already seen the deaths of models aspiring to be “size zero” by crash dieting. These points out the risk of crash diets. At this point it is interesting to know about weight loss with out diet change. and that vegitable diet reduces risk of heart attack.
