Spinach Help Build Muscle
If you want bulging biceps like Popeye the sailor, then all you have to do is eat his favourite food – spinach.
And, saying this are scientists from Rutgers University who have found that the green vegetable really does boost strength. The secret behind this, they reveal, is that spinach contains phytoecdysteroids, a type of steroid that increases the development of muscles.
As a part of their study the researchers used extracts of phytoecdysteriods on lab samples of human muscle, and found that it speeded up muscle growth by 20%. According to the New Scientist, on conducting trials on rats, the researchers found that spinach extracts made the rodents stronger within a month, the Daily Express reported on Thursday.
Researchers state that eating spinach is not only a good idea if you want strong muscles, but also if you want to keep eye disease, teeth, gum problems and anaemia at bay. But it does suggest the US creators of the famous nautical hero were ahead of their time.
It is said they toyed with the idea of making garlic Popeye’s strength enhancer when they devised the original comic strip in 1919 – but by 1932 he was eating spinach to give him almost superhuman powers.
Spinach was chosen because it was known to be extremely healthy. Although it actually contains less iron than many other vegetables, it has many other health-giving properties.

Regular Exercise Cuts Blood Clot Risk
Playing outdoor games regularly reduces the risk of developing blood clots by 39 per cent in women and 22 per cent in men, according to a study published in Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.
Researchers from Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands evaluated 7,860 people in the 18 to 70 years age group. They compared patients who had suffered their first blood clot in a leg vein or lung artery with control subjects who had never experienced blood clots.
Thirty-one per cent of the patients and 40 per cent of the control subjects participated in sports on a regular basis.
The study revealed that participating in sports at least once per week, regardless of the type of sport or its intensity, reduced the risk of developing a blood clot in a lung artery by 46 per cent and in a leg vein by 24 per cent.
The results were applicable to both men and women.
In fact, the study’s co-author F.R. Rosendaal said: “Women were shown to be even more likely to reap the benefits of regular sporting activities than men. When we excluded women who were pregnant or receiving oral contraceptive or hormone replacement therapy – all possible causes of blood clots – the risk for women was reduced by 55 per cent.” There is a separate article on Exercise during pregnancy for those who are interested.
Although strenuous activity is known to increase the risk of blood clot development in old age, the net effect of participation in sports by old people may be positive.
The study also revealed that people who did not participate in sports were more than four-times as likely to develop a blood clot if they were obese than their lean counterparts.
“When we looked at the results, we found that, overall, the mere fact that people took part in a sporting activity at least once a week was enough to lower their risk of blood clots,” say the authors. Nuts to Clobber Cholesterol
If you are looking for a way to keep your heart healthy and still satisfy your snacking mood, pistachios and sunflower seeds may be the powerful cholesterol-fighting tool your body needs.
A new study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, shows that these nuts and seeds rank at the top of the list for containing cholesterol-lowering compounds, phytosterols. While many nuts contain this helpful compound, the study is the first to determine which of these little treats have the largest amount of this cholesterol-clobbering ingredient.
“We tried to establish values for all these foods, so others can determine their value in the diet,” said Dr. Katherine Phillips, study author from the department of biochemistry and food chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Phytosterols are found only in plant-based foods and very closely resemble the molecular structure of cholesterol. But unlike cholesterol, phytosterols are not easily absorbed by the body. Scientists believe that because of this, the compound can partially block cholesterol from being absorbed, thereby lowering overall cholesterol levels naturally.
Philips and her colleagues recognized that nuts and seeds tend to be high in phytosterols, but no study had adequately compared the amounts of the compound found in all of the varieties, which range in size from poppy seeds to walnuts.
While wheat germ and sesame seeds were found to contain the highest amount of phytosterols, according to the tests, most people do not eat these foods by themselves, let alone in high enough amounts for it to matter. So, the third and forth place finishers, sunflower seeds and pistachios, were considered by Philips to be the most practical nutty snack for people looking to lower their cholesterol.
Even if you don’t consider sunflower seeds or pistachios a desirable treat, any of the nuts and seeds tested were found to contain at least a small amount of phytosterols. So, if walnuts are more tempting than pistachios, munch away. But Philips also advises you to consider other options, such as diet and exercise, that are proven to substantially help lower your cholesterol.
“This isn’t the only food product to prevent high cholesterol,” she said. “There are many other factors at play.” It is well known that Macadamia nuts helps reduce heart attack.

Macadamia Nuts Help Reduce Heart Attack

There is a new entrant in the category of heart healthy food. Macadamia nuts included in a heart healthy diet can effectively cut low-density cholesterol or bad cholesterol, thereby reducing the risk of developing cardiovascular problems, according to a new study.
The researchers suggest that macadamia nuts should be included among nuts with qualified health claims.
“We looked at macadamia nuts because they are not currently included in the health claim for tree nuts, while other tree nuts are currently recommended as part of a heart healthy diet,” said Dr. Amy E. Griel, a recent Penn State Ph.D. recipient in nutrition and now senior nutrition scientist at The Hershey Company.
“Macadamia nuts have higher levels of mono saturated fats, like those found in olive oil compared with other tree nuts,” she added.
“Epidemiological studies showed that people who are frequent nut consumers have decreased risk of heart disease,” said Penny Kris-Etherton, co-author and distinguished professor of nutritional sciences.
The study involved participants who had slightly elevated cholesterol levels, normal blood pressure and were not taking lipid-lowering drugs.
The participants were randomly assigned either the macadamia nut diet or the standard American diet and provided all meals for the participants for five weeks. They then switched diets and continued eating only food provided by the researchers for another five weeks.
The findings revealed that Healthy Heart diet with macadamia nuts did reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared with the standard American diet.
The macadamia nuts reduced total cholesterol by 9.4 percent and low-density lipoprotein by 8.9 percent.
“We found that the reduction in LDL or bad cholesterol we observed was greater than would be predicted by just the healthy fats in the nuts alone,” said Griel.
“This indicates that there is something else in the nuts that helps lower cholesterol,” she added.

What is Macadamia?

Oofficialy, ejaculation in less than 60 seconds from start of intercourse is “premature ejaculation”.
A 20-member panel of the world’s leading sexual health experts, set up by the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM), has for the first time defined premature ejaculation (PE) — a sexual dysfunction affecting 30% of the world’s adult men.
Speaking to TOI from Orlando, eminent American urologist Ira D Sharlip, the study’s main author, said the medical definition of PE — the bane of millions of men worldwide — was reached after “studying hundreds of international studies published on PE.” The team’s study, that backs the definition, will be published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine on Saturday. It will also be officially announced on May 19 at the American Urological Association’s annual conference in Florida.
Dr Sharlip told TOI, “The definition of lifelong PE is now a form of sexual dysfunction in which ejaculation occurs within a minute of vaginal penetration, almost every time during intercourse. The previous definitions did not quantify the time limit and so many men who just reached a climax early, sometimes mistook themselves to be suffering from PE, causing them tremendous mental distress, depression, anxiety and marital discord.”
According to Dr Sharlip, the hope now is that more people reaching climax within a minute will understand PE as a medical condition and seek treatment without suffering in silence.
He says the definition would also help drug companies identify actual PE patients when conducting a drug trail in the future. In September 2006, ISSM reportedly felt the need for an objective evidence based definition of PE. They then set up a committee of 20 experts representing every continent. The panel of experts agreed that the constructs that were necessary to define PE were time to ejaculation, inability to delay ejaculation and negative consequences from PE.
“We reviewed hundreds of published papers on PE, specially 20 that specifically addressed objective measures to pinpoint PE. The committee met in Amsterdam in October to reach a conclusive definition. Those with PE should be immediately put on a combination of psychological and drug therapy,” Dr Sharlip said.
Reacting to the study, Dr Vikram Sharma, urologist at Max Hospital, told TOI that the standardization would now reduce incorrect diagnosis of PE cases across the world. Indian surveys have shown that 10% of all adult males in the country suffer from some sort of sexual dysfunction, a large chunk of which — nearly 7% — would be of PE.
According to Dr Sharma, PE most commonly affects Indian men aged 19-26 years and decreases by nearly 50% after they reach 30.
“Till now, whenever patients complained of PE or reaching climax before five minutes of intercourse, we first put them on counselling sessions. However, now we know that in patients who ejaculate within a minute, it is a pathological disorder that would need immediate medical intervention. In absense of any standardisation earlier, doctors failed to diagnose serious PE cases thereby prolonging mental and physical trauma for the patient,” Dr Sharma said.
Experts say PE is humiliating for adult men and so many don’t acknowledge and address it until it is too late.

Improve Sex by Loosing Weight
Weight loss may help resolve erectile dysfunction in obese men, according to new research presented on May 15 at the 103rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA).
Morbid obesity can cause sexual dysfunction independent of other common confounders, including diabetes, hypertension and smoking.
In this study from researchers in Boston and Philadelphia, sexual function was normalized in some men who underwent gastric bypass surgery for weight loss.
“This study shows that weight loss and other risk factors which are alleviated by weight loss may be keys to restoring sexual function,” said Anthony Y. Smith, M.D.
“These results give men another reason to improve their health by losing weight,” he added.
In the study, 95 patients undergoing gastric bypass surgery for weight loss completed the Brief Sexual Inventory (BSI) pre- and post-operatively.
On average, BSI scores improved in all categories, including sexual drive, erectile function, ejaculatory function, problem assessment and sexual satisfaction.
The amount of weight lost predicted the degree of improvement in all areas of the survey.
Results were then compared to data from the Olmstead County Study of Urinary Health Status Survey, a community-based prospective study often used as a baseline for study comparison.
After an average of 67 percent weight loss post-bypass, BSI scores were comparable to patients in the Olmstead Study.
Gastric bypass surgery, a procedure that reduces the body’s caloric intake, can be used to induce significant weight loss in the obese.
Calorie reduction is accomplished by making the stomach smaller and bypassing part of the stomach and small intestines so that fewer calories are absorbed.
The patient feels full faster and learns to reduce the amount of food that he/she eats.

High Blood Pressure Biggest Killer
High blood pressure, a largely ignored physical condition, is now turning to be one of the world’s biggest killers. What’s worse, it’s causing high mortality among people in developing countries like India and China.
It is estimated that, about one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure, but because there are no symptoms, nearly one-third of these people don’t know they have it. In fact, many people have high blood pressure for years without knowing it. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure or kidney failure. This is why high blood pressure is often called the “silent killer.” The only way to tell if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked.
A study to calculate high BP’s real effects has found some chilling facts —about 54% of all strokes, 47% of ischaemic heart disease, 75% of hypertensive disease and 25% of other cardiovascular disease globally resulted from high BP.
Conducted by a team of scientists from the University of Auckland in New Zealand and reported in medical journal ‘The Lancet’ on Saturday, the study also estimated that 7.6 million people died prematurely because of high BP in 2001.
The study also breaks the myth that high BP was a major problem in high-income countries, and says that more than 80% of high BP related diseases occur in developing countries like India and mostly among younger adults.
Over 92 million of all disability adjusted life years were also attributable to high BP.
The study says that 52% of deaths from such disorders in India occur before 70 years of age, compared with 23% in established-market economies.
Reacting to the study, Dr Anoop Misra from Fortis hospitals says that hypertension is directly responsible for 57% of all stroke deaths and 24% of all coronary heart disease deaths in India.
“We estimate there are 31.5 million hypertensives in rural and 34 million in urban India. It’s mainly due to high salt intake, obesity, diabetes, stress and genetic factors,” he said.
Cardiologist Dr K K Agarwal said even a slight reduction of high BP can greatly benefit people. “If pre-hypertension is reduced, 40% of heart attacks can be prevented. If 5 mm of BP is reduced, 21% mortality can be reduced. For every kg you lose, your BP will come down by 1 mm.”
Cardiologist Dr Deepak Natarajan added: “India has a scandalously high number of hypertensives, thanks to the fact that we are the world’s most sedentary nation. Both the poor and the rich are suffering from high BP.”
Dr Carlene Lawes from the University of Auckland, who used data from WHO’s Global Burden of Disease study to calculate the statistics, said rates of disease are generally
much higher in developing than in developed countries and occur most in people aged 45-69 years.

Healthy mind promotes physical health. The reverse is also true. The mind and the body are two mutually connected entities. However, the mind’s influence on the body is deeper than that of the body on the mind. Mental health is connected with the feeling of equality. Without this feeling the mind cannot be healthy. The principle of equality is also the principle of mental health.
The first principle of mental health is: Know thyself. One who does not know his own strength and weakness cannot be mentally healthy. We do not know our strength because we are weak and we feel a sense of being wretched. We become excited when somebody misbehaves with us because we do not know our weakness. In such cases we overlook ourselves and try to find fault with others.
The second principle of mental health is the willingness to admit one’s responsibility for whatever has been done. We are not prepared to visualise the consequences of our actions and that is why our mind has no peace. It is unhealthy to avoid responsibility for our actions. It can lead to mental illness. One needs courage to admit his faults. A weak mind does not have this courage.
One should take responsibility for the good as well as bad consequences of one’s actions. It is the weak who find fault with others. They want to save their own skin. We generally like to be praised for our good actions but are not prepared to be blamed for the bad consequences of our actions.
Devotion to truth is the third principle of mental health. Truth is experience of the law governing the universe. Death is a universal law. It has no exception. All the prophets and great men of the world met death. Nobody is immortal. Everyone who is born must die one day. Death is, therefore, a truth. In the same way karma (action) and tela (time) are also truths. One who admits the operation of the laws, which govern nature, is a mentally healthy man.
Tolerance is the fourth principle of mental health. An intolerant man is always miserable. Moreover, the behaviour of an intolerant man is always unpredictable. If an intolerant man is meditating and if the fan is stopped, his mind will be upset and his meditation will break.
He who commands tolerance is indifferent to losses and gains. Wealth and riches are not lasting. Heat and cold, comfort and pain and convenience and inconvenience do not affect the tolerant man. They affect those who do not possess the requisite strength to face them. Those who have been born and brought up in the midst of difficulties and privations ultimately develop in themselves the spirit of tolerance.
The fifth principle of mental health is that we should present ourselves as we are. We should not put up appearances. Generally people are snobs in their social life and when people see them in their true colours they are put in a quandary. Secretiveness creates ill feelings.
Those who put up appearances not only deceive others, they deceive themselves also. They create difficulties for all. We try to create false impressions on the minds of others in order to hide our own real state. You cannot hide reality for a long time. Only he whose mind is weak tries to hide facts. On the other hand he whose mind is strong and sound will always present himself as he is.
